Health care for your pet

Checkup

A checkup, a physical, a wellness exam- people have different names for it but it is the cornerstone to the health of your pet.

How often should I see my Greenbrae Veterinarian?

It can be hard to see the vet as often as we should. Sometimes it is hard to take off time from work, it can be seen as an extra expense, or it could just be because your animal is skittish and uncooperative whenever you try to bring them for a physical.

Whatever the reason, it is highly recommended that you take your pet to the veterinarian at least once a year. Puppies and kittens should go more often as they develop quickly and so can their medical issues. Elderly pets should also be brought for a check-up more than once a year as it is the time in their lives when issues can sneak up on them.

What to expect with your pet’s checkup

When you visit Family Animal Hospital so that your pet can receive a physical, you can expect a full examination from head to tail.

The examination will check your furry family member’s:

  • Weight
  • Body temperature
  • Breathing
  • Anxiety levels
  • Nose
  • Eyes
  • Ears
  • Teeth and mouth
  • Skin
  • Lymph nodes
  • Joints
  • Mucus membranes
  • Heart
  • Lungs

If you think that your pet has been suffering from any issues or if they have been acting differently from normal then please let one of our veterinarians know. After the examination the vet will discuss the health of your pet with you. Based on those findings the veterinarian may have some recommendations for the long life of your pet.

End-of-life care

Our pets give us so much. They comfort us when we are sad, soothe us when we are stressed and welcome us home after a long day. They are friends, brothers, sisters, caretakers, exercise buddies, bed warmers and the best listeners you will ever know. Sure, occasionally they may have done some aggressive “critique” of your interior design selections (scratched up a chair or sofa) or your fashion choices (chewed a slipper). But you forgave them easily because they have a lot of personality and have many different ways of showing it. Sometimes you may have questioned their behavior but you never questioned that they were an important part of the family.

Unfortunately and with a heavy heart, there comes a time when we must say goodbye. Sometimes they pass away easily. They go to sleep and painlessly leave this world. But there are other times when they are in continuous pain, they can no longer live a happy life and there is no cure.

We are here to support you

Family Animal Hospital realizes that this is a difficult time for any family and our compassionate staff is available to provide support during this period. We will discuss any and all aspects of your pet’s end-of-life care. We will go over all of the medical decisions available to your pet and aid you in sorting through the key considerations when assessing your pet’s quality of life. We are respectful of your decisions and understand that you may need time to weigh your options.

“Love is stronger than death even though it can’t stop death from happening, but no matter how hard death tries it can’t separate people from love. It can’t take away our memories either. In the end, life is stronger than death”
